Foreign language support in Windows Mobile (WM) based devices are pretty lacking out of the box. You would have to buy 3rd party software like CE-Star to even display Chinese characters, for example. WM itself couldn’t display Chinese characters even if I manually copied over the appropriate font.
I was curious on how iPhone supports foreign languages, or more specifically, Chinese. I understand that currently there is no way to enter Chinese on iPhone, and that’s okay for me given I don’t write Chinese on my PDA/phones much. After some Internet digging, I found this article that says iPhone does display Chinese out of the box. Excellent news.
Though not as important, I wonder if the English version of iPhone could ever support Chinese input.
[Update @ 2007-07-22T22:54-8:00] I just confirmed myself that iPhone is able to display Chinese in Safari.
I had forgotten to mention another issue with Chinese support in WM: even with 3rd party software like CE-Star, WM Media Player on my HTC-S620 couldn’t display Chinese metadata embedded in MP3s. The same Unicode characters were fine in XP/Vista.
