Bye bye MacBook

A few weeks ago the battery of my wife’s MacBook died. I could buy a new battery and continue my Mac journey, but I decided to put it up for sale on Craigslist. That was this morning at 1am.

The MacBook is now gone, and I don’t foresee another Mac in my home for a long while, unless I get another for free. :)

San Jose ATM skimming case gets closer

I watched on TV last night about the San Jose ATM skimming case. A lot of people’s money was stolen when they used their ATM cards at a San Jose Archo gas station. The ATMs there had been hacked to swipe the card info and PIN. The thieves then used a cloned card to withdraw money from bank ATMs.

I saw the TV news report and thought that was the end of it. Today I learned that a colleague lost a few hundred dollars from this scam. Luckily his bank provides a fraud prevention program, and he would be getting his money back.

Poor trade-in offers from Infiniti dealers

So I have been shopping for an Infiniti G35 6MT. The quotes for the 6MT itself were pretty decent, as in very close to invoice. The trade-in quote for my Civic Si, however, were not so favorable. One dealer gave me a value that’s $3000 less than Kelly Blue Book (KBB)’s trade-in price for such a car in Good condition. The other gave me a number that’s $2000 less. Apparently they looked at the auction price, which makes me wonder if the KBB’s trade-in prices are ever used. Now I will either sell the Civic Si privately or postpone the G35 purchase.

Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus dealership experience

This afternoon I went to three car dealers to test drive competitors of Infiniti G35. Who knows, I might like one more than the G35. The dealerships are for Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus, in that order.

So You Think You Can Dance 2008

So You Think You Can Dance is back! The producers really saved the best for last in tonight’s season premiere. Get a load of this:

Be sure to watch all the way till the end, including the special move Robert Muraine (the performer in the video) did for Nigel Lythgoe. This move got him straight to Vegas.

PS, I thought Rober Muraine looked like the ‘turtle teacher’ (龟公) in Dragonball (七龙珠) when he was swirling his neck/head. :)

Pentax Optio W60 looks interesting

I am currently tempted to replace my ancient Canon PowerShot A80, a 4 mega-pixel cave-camera, with a more capable point-and-shoot. I originally aimed for a model with RAW capability, but after looking around the market and only (more or less) finding the gigantic Canon G9, I crossed RAW off my requirement list.

I haven’t looked at many other cameras, but my current candidate is the Nikon Coolpix P5100, mainly because I thought its controls would be similar to my Nikon D80’s. P5100’s 35mm-123mm lens is a bit lacking in the wide angle side though.

Pentax Optio W60

At this point Pentax’s upcoming Optio W60 certainly looks interesting. It doesn’t do RAW, but it has an internal (internal!) 5x zoom lens, from 28mm to 140mm. Being water proof is a nice bonus. Downside is that it doesn’t offer much manual control.

I eagerly await proper reviews.

Thumbs up to Firefox 3.0, so far

I just tried Firefox 3.0 RC1 this afternoon at work (Firefox 2.x was getting intolerably slow). Let me just say that Firefox 3.0 RC1 is so much better that I started to installed it at home as well.
